Damage Reversal
[Vabelcion, the Battle-Forged] (2021GB03-002)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Sentinel Summoning (Instant Action: If it's currently your opponent's turn, normal summon this.)
■"Göndul's Barrage" - Standard Action: [DR 3] Choose 1 enemy card in play and put it into the graveyard.
Damage reversal is a game action where you flip over a specified number of face-up cards in your damage zone face down, written in the format “DR (number to flip face down)”.
-You cannot perform damage reversal at all if you do not have the required number of face up cards in your damage zone. In this case, no cards are flipped face down.
-Damage reversal written as “DR (number): (condition)” means “Flip face down (number) face up cards in your damage zone that fulfill the (condition)”. If multiple conditions are specified as in “DR (number): (condition) or (condition)”, then each card you flip face down must fulfill at least 1 of the conditions specified.
-A face down card in your damage zone is treated as having none of the information printed on it. However, it still counts as 1 card in your damage zone (for example, you can still choose a face down card when healing life).
-Face down cards in a damage zone are revealed only to the player that owns that damage zone, and that player can check the hidden side of those cards at any time.
-You cannot play a face down card in your damage zone with an effect that would play a card in your damage zone, even if it allowed you to play a card without paying its cost. So if you tried to play a face down card with something like [Schrödinger's Cat] (2020GB01-098), it would do nothing.
Discount
[Thermobaric Bomb] (2021GB03-050)
Timing: Standard Action
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 1 to play this.
■Destroy all set cards.
Discount allows you to pay a specific cost when playing a card to exhaust less resources than the card’s level.
-The cost specified by the discount is performed when you decide the number of resources to exhaust pay for the card, and it is strictly optional. You can always choose to pay the full cost of the card instead.
-If your ruler is an [Overlord], you can still perform the actions specified in the discount, but you will still pay exactly 1 resource for playing the card (even if the resource cost would be reduced to 0).
Sentinel Summoning
[Vabelcion, the Battle-Forged] (2021GB03-002)
Discount: If you're playing this from your hand, you may [Put 1 card from your hand on the bottom of your deck.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
Sentinel Summoning (Instant Action: If it's currently your opponent's turn, normal summon this.)
■"Göndul's Barrage" - Standard Action: [DR 3] Choose 1 enemy card in play and put it into the graveyard.
Sentinel Summoning allows you to normal summon a unit as an instant action during your opponent’s turn.
-You can do this as an instant action, so you can play it at any time you could play an instant action event, including in response to your opponent playing a card, during combat, or when they end their turn.
-This counts as a normal summon, and you still have to pay the cost of the card as usual. However, you ignore your summon cap during your opponent’s turn.
Deadly
[Dark Knight Gododdin] (2021GB03-005)
【TD】 Choose 1 "Dark Knight" unit of level 1 or less in your graveyard. Special summon it.
■Your "Dark Knight" cards have Deadly (A unit that is dealt combat damage by a unit with Deadly is destroyed at the end of the damage step).
Deadly is an automatic ability which causes a unit that was dealt combat damage to be destroyed.
-The ability is activated with 1 or more points of combat damage. If the combat damage dealt is 0, then the ability is not activated.
-As long as the damage dealt to a unit is combat damage, the ability is activated. This includes combat damage dealt through effects of abilities like Intercept and Retaliate.
-The ability does not get activated through any damage that is not combat damage. If a unit with Deadlycould deal effect damage to another unit, that will not activate Deadly.
-This ability is activated at the end of combat. (The reminder text says “at the end of the damage step”, but this is incorrect.)
Ability Names with “<>”
[ERRATA] [Ox Oni Tenkai] (2021GB03-072)
Updated Text: ■This is treated as being level 0 for <Hundred Yokai March>.
[ERRATA] [Shinno Akugoro, King of the Renegades] (2021GB03-058 & 2021GB03-UR09)
Updated Text: ■This is treated as being level 0 for <Hundred Yokai March>.
■This cannot be placed in a defense zone.
■"Lotus Hex" - Standard Action: [Remove 1 Supernatural card in your graveyard from the game.] Choose 1 enemy unit and deal 1 damage to it.
■"Lord of the Ayakashi": As this would leave play, you may [DR 3: Supernatural]. If you do, this remains in play instead.
“<>” in the text of a card will indicate that it is referring to any ability with a name that includes the exact phrase within the <>. For example, if it says <Hundred Yokai March> , that means the card or ability is referencing any ability with “Hundred Yokai March” in its name, such as “Hundred Yokai March Lv.0”. The current printing of the cards that do this do not have <>, so they have been given an errata which adds them.
-When an ability A is referencing an ability B through the use of <>, ability A is active only when resolving ability B or its applying its effects. For example, in the case of [Ox Oni Tenkai], its ability is active when a “Hundred Yokai March” ability is being played--regardless of which zone the [Ox Oni Tenkai] is in, including the deck or drive zone.
Normal Summon as an Instant Action
[ERRATA] [A7 "Cheshire" the Cat] (2021GB03-041)
Updated Text: ■This unit can be normal summoned as an instant action.
【TD】 Choose 1 allied unit. Until the end of turn, it gains +1 HP.
■"A Grin without a Cat" - Turn 1 - Standard Action: Return this to your hand.
* All cards that say “Instant Action: Normal summon this.” or something similar have been given an errata to instead say “This can be normal summoned as an instant action”.
Some units in Vol. 3 can be summoned as an instant action instead of a standard action.
-This still counts as a normal summon, so you still have to pay its cost and not have reached the limit of your summon cap for the turn. However, you ignore your summon cap during your opponent’s turn.
-You can normal summon a unit with this ability as an instant action from your drive zone as well. However, it will still get sent to the graveyard at the end of the main phase if you do not play the card beforehand. Also, if the unit has an 【OD】 ability, you must either choose not to use that ability or fully resolve it before you can normal summon the unit.
-If somehow you are able to play a unit with this ability from somewhere outside of your hand or drive zone, you can still play it as an Instant Action.
Events that Can Be Played Directly From a Hand
[Sword of Bruncvík] (2021GB03-051)
【CNT】: Play this card.
Timing: Instant Action
■This event can also be played directly from your hand.
■Choose 1 enemy unit and deal 2 damage to it. Then, deal 2 damage to it again.
Normally, event cards with timings other than “standard action” can only be played from a set zone. However, booster set Vol.3 includes a few events that can be played directly from your hand, even if the timing listed is something other than “standard action”.
-This still counts as playing the card normally, so you must pay the cost for it as usual.
“As (a Card) Attacks”
[4. D - Dreadnaught] (2021GB03-L01a & 2021GB03-L01b)
Setup: None (0 cards in hand, 0 resources)
Start of Turn: Drive 1 card.
Treat all cards you play as if you paid the cost for them. You cannot have a hand.
■As this ruler attacks, drive 1.
Abilities written as “as (a card) attacks” are added directly to the gate after all other automatic abilities triggered “when (a card) attacks” are played and added to the gate. Hence, because an “as (a card) attacks” ability gets added to the gate last, it is then resolved first, before any “when (a card) attacks” abilities that were also triggered.
-An ability written like this is not played, but added directly to the gate by the rules of the game.
-Players can play other cards and abilities in response to this type of ability as normal.
Clarification on Choosing Targets
[Starfall Orb] (2021GB03-007)
Timing: Standard Action
■Choose 1 of the following:
-Your opponent chooses 1 of their set cards. Put the rest of their other set cards into the graveyard.
-Choose 1 level 3 enemy unit and destroy it.
In Vol.3, there are a few cards that instruct your opponent to choose 1 or more cards. Just as with cards and abilities where you would choose a target, the opponent makes their decision right when you play such a card or ability, before it gets added to the gate and then resolved.
[Rain of Tears] (2021GB03-023)
Timing: Standard Action
■Your opponent chooses 2 cards from their hand and discards them.
■Standard Action: [Pay 1 resource and discard this from your hand.] Draw 1 card.
[Helldiver White Knight] (2021GB03-049)
■"Aerial Reconnaissance" - Standard Action: [DR 3: Zoo Brigade] Look at your opponent's hand. Choose 1 card from among them, and your opponent discards it.
[Nyarlathotep of the Thousand Masks] (2021GB03-110)
【CNT】: You may put 2 of your charges on the bottom of their owners' decks. If you do, choose 1 Endbringer unit in your hand and special summon it.
Discount: You may [Add 1 card from your hand as a face down charge underneath an allied unit or field.] to instead pay a cost of 2 to play this.
■"The Crawling Chaos" - Standard Action: [Put 1 of your charges on the bottom of its owner's deck and DR 1: Exvader.] Choose 1 enemy set card and destroy it.
■"Messenger of the Ancient Ones" - Instant Action: [DR 2] Without looking at it, add the top card of your deck as a face down charge underneath 1 allied Exvader card.
When a card or ability instructs you to “choose” a card in your hand or deck, it is not treated as choosing a target. Hence, the choice is made when you resolve the card or ability, not when you play it. If your opponent plays [Helldiver White Knight]’s “Aerial Reconnaissance” ability against you, you have a chance to play cards and abilities before you have to reveal your hand and have your opponent choose a card from it.
